Grading Diamonds by the 4Cs

The 4Cs (color, cut, clarity, carat) serve as a way for us to ensure diamond quality and uphold the standards set by the Gemological Institute of America.

Cut

A diamond’s cut refers to different facets that affect the stone including its brilliance, fire, and scintillation, as well as its durability, polish, symmetry, and weight ratio.

Carat

Carat refers to a stone’s overall weight and is a universal standard of measurements for diamonds.

Color

Diamond color is graded on a scale, from D to Z, and represents the presence of color in the stone from colorless to light coloration.

Clarity

A diamond’s clarity is dependent upon the existence of unique markers inside (inclusions) or externally (blemishes) to the stone and is graded on a scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a piece demi-fine vs. fine?

Fine jewelry is often solid gold or other precious metals and precious gemstones, while demi-fine styles use plating techniques to provide that fine jewelry look without the fine jewelry cost. This allows us to showcase a collection with more affordable pricing while still using luxe materials like gold and precious gemstones.

What is 18k gold vermeil?

Vermeil (pronounced “vehr-may”) is a plating of 18k Yellow Gold over Sterling Silver. Vermeil pieces have more resistance to tarnishing and abrasion, thanks to their solid Sterling Silver base and 2.5 microns of 18k Yellow Gold plating.

What is sterling silver?

Sterling Silver offers the ideal balance of durability and shine. We use Sterling Silver which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, which is stronger than pure silver, making Sterling Silver pieces perfect for long-term wear.

What is the benefit of 14k gold?

Our fine jewelry collection is made with solid 14k gold, which is known for its classic shine and high durability. 14k gold combines gold with other metals to increase its strength and offers a more affordable price point.

How do I clean my fine jewelry?

With a little love and care, these styles will last a lifetime. To clean, use a small amount of gentle hand soap, rinse with water, and dry it with a soft cloth. We don’t recommend using jewelry dips or polishes as they can often contain harsh chemical abrasives that can damage your jewelry over time, but if you love that type of shine, our Sparkle and Shine Pen Duo kit is designed to safely cleanse, polish, and enhance the beauty of your demi-fine and fine jewelry.

Is my fine jewelry waterproof?

The best way to ensure your jewelry remains clean and undamaged is to be gentle with your purchase. We do recommend you remove your jewelry prior to swimming, showering, and exercising to maintain its shine. Sweat and body oils naturally build up on your jewelry over time, but they can be removed by using the cleaning steps above. When not wearing, we recommend storing it in its pouch or a lined box.

How are your diamonds graded?

Our diamonds are graded using the classic 4Cs. Our diamonds all fall within the H-J color range and sit within the SI1-SI2 clarity range, dependent on the style. We offer cuts in round brilliant, princess, or baguette and our carats vary with each style.
